A mesh screen refers to a screen made of very tightly woven mesh fabric. Mesh screens are used to classify the size of specific particles, and the appropriate mesh screen specification for the particle size being classified must be used.
The mesh count of a stainless steel mesh screen refers to the number of mesh openings per inch (24.5mm) between the wires of the mesh. Typically, stainless steel mesh screens first indicate the mesh openings in the vertical direction, and then indicate the mesh openings in the horizontal direction.
Wire diameter refers to the spacing between the wires that make up the mesh, and is calculated using the following formula:
Wire diameter (mm) = 25.4 / mesh count - wire spacing (mm)
Types and characteristics of stainless-steel mesh
Plain Weave
- Plain Weave Mesh:
The most common method of weaving, in which the warp and weft wires intersect at right angles to form a tightly woven mesh with uniform hole size and shape. Plain weave mesh is suitable for a wide range of applications, and wire diameters of approximately 80% of the theoretical space limit are typically used.
Twill Weave
- Twill Weave Mesh:
In twill weave mesh, the warp and weft wires cross two or more wires over and under each other. Twill weave mesh can be made with larger wire diameters than plain weave mesh and offers the advantage of reduced strain hardening due to lower warp bending angles. This makes it suitable for applications that require higher loads.
Plain Dutch weave
- Plain Dutch weave Mesh:
Plain Dutch weave mesh is a type of plain weave that uses thicker warp threads and denser weft threads. Liquids or gases are passed through the gaps between the warp and weft intersections. Plain Dutch weave is optimal for separation processes such as filtration and dewatering centrifuges. The mesh size is indicated by the number of weft threads per 25.4mm.
Twill Dutch weave
- Twill Dutch weave:
Twill Dutch weave mesh is a combination of twill and plain Dutch weaves. The weft threads are tightly woven on both sides of the mesh, resulting in a mesh with twice the density of a plain Dutch weave mesh. Twill Dutch weave is used for the densest and most robust separation filters and can be made up to several thousand mesh. The mesh size is indicated by the number of weft threads per 25.4mm.
